I open the cedar chest
And pull out another blanket
Wool, blue and white and
Several muted shades of red
I spread it over the comforter
Then open the covers and slide in
The sheets are soft and crisp
And the blankets weigh down
Settling around me with
The gentle burdens of life
All of the things we carry
That buffer us from the cold
Of a winter's night
