The phone rings and wakes me
She stirs
I answer quietly
Laying there next to her
In one world
Listening to another
She wakes
Her eyes are wide and expressive
But a mask as she watches me
She hears half a conversation
It ends
I smile
I turn the phone off
I set it down
I have not always made that choice
She smiles
She kisses me gently on the neck
Below my ear
Her lips soft, dry, and warm
She drapes her body on mine
I close my eyes
I breathe
She rises and falls with each breath
A thousand worlds
Today, here, now
This one
