"…Living only for the moment, turning our full attention to the pleasures of the moon, the snow, the cherry blossoms and the maple leaves; singing songs, drinking wine, diverting ourselves just floating, floating….refusing to be disheartened, like a gourd floating along with the river current; this is what we call the floating world…” Asai Ryoi, in Ukiyo Monogatari (Tales of the Floating World, 1661)

A Jazz Ensemble Morning
It is a slow and quiet morning here in California. The sun is rising, but the morning clouds haven't quite burned off. It is a cool morning, with the promise of heat later in the day. I am starting my three day weekend as lazily as I can. On waking, I lingered in bed and watched the morning unfolding, listening to the street sounds outside the window, the floating voices of the people walking by. Snippets of conversation rose up through the windows and bounced around the room, disconnected sentences, discordant voices, all combining for sort of a jazz ensemble effect. It was a good way to start the day and the weekend.
