"…Living only for the moment, turning our full attention to the pleasures of the moon, the snow, the cherry blossoms and the maple leaves; singing songs, drinking wine, diverting ourselves just floating, floating….refusing to be disheartened, like a gourd floating along with the river current; this is what we call the floating world…” Asai Ryoi, in Ukiyo Monogatari (Tales of the Floating World, 1661)

The Year Ends
I've reached the end of the year and I am going to slide out with a great movie - "Casablanca". During a normal year this last week is a reflective week for me - a week in which I consider the year that went before and the year to come. However, the visit from my brother and my niece disrupted my year end routine. (That is not necessarily a bad thing.) Consequently, I am just now entering into the routine of self-examination and will doubtlessly spend tomorrow doing that examination. My plan tonight is dinner at Pierre and Helen's - good food, good company, good conversation.
