"…Living only for the moment, turning our full attention to the pleasures of the moon, the snow, the cherry blossoms and the maple leaves; singing songs, drinking wine, diverting ourselves just floating, floating….refusing to be disheartened, like a gourd floating along with the river current; this is what we call the floating world…” Asai Ryoi, in Ukiyo Monogatari (Tales of the Floating World, 1661)

Each Moment
It was a very good day. I woke at 5:30 AM, having slept simply and deeply the night through. I woke from a dream of raspberries. It was a soft and sensual dream and a wonderful way to wake. I had my morning coffee. I chatted online for a while. Then, breakfast with friends - biscuits, gravy, scrambled eggs, coffee and orange juice. From there, a couple of incidental errands. Once those were done I swung by Alum Rock Park and took a hike up into the low foothills that line the east side of San Jose. The weather was cool and the sky mostly cloudy, so the park was scarcely used, which was nice. It was good to just get out and hike for an hour or so. After that, groceries and I swung home. I played online for a while, wrote and sent some email, chatted a bit. Then, cooked dinner, entertained friends, unwound with a little writing. The best thing of the day? In each moment I was in, I was in that moment. Powerful and elegant.
