"…Living only for the moment, turning our full attention to the pleasures of the moon, the snow, the cherry blossoms and the maple leaves; singing songs, drinking wine, diverting ourselves just floating, floating….refusing to be disheartened, like a gourd floating along with the river current; this is what we call the floating world…” Asai Ryoi, in Ukiyo Monogatari (Tales of the Floating World, 1661)

I Saw Two Falcons
Just before dawn. I am walking down Mission Street on my way back to the SF Marriott with a cup of coffee. There is a light rain. A pair of falcons come down 3rd Street about a hundred feet up. They are not flying, instead, they are gliding on the currents of the California wind, spinning silently among the towering structures of steel and glass. They break north up Mission, reach 4th Street, spin around in the intersection and glide back down Mission to the south, toward the Moscone Center. They fly right over me, close enough that I can see their bright eyes peering at me as they pass.
